
Ever see those [A.I.R] signs that hang atop the front door of every loft building that you wish you could live in? Well, that's where you'll find some of the 150,000 some odd (pun intended) New Yorkers who describe themselves as working in the arts living. These folks make up a surprisingly small 4.3% of the total working class. The map above shows the density of these artists in the 5 boroughs and as Gothamist reports, "more than a fifth of residents in Chelsea, the Village, SoHo, Tribeca, Dumbo and Williamsburg are engaged in creative pursuits."
Gothamist asks a very important question that i would like to extend to you: What can be done about artists' contradictory role as both catalyst and victim of gentrification?
