Linkage Love from Two of the Best Brooklyn Blogs

3greenpoint.jpg
[Brooklyn Record] Friday Blog Wrap

Last Friday was a LOVEly day indeed- but even better when I got home and noticed that two of my favorite Brooklyn blogs had posted a couple of photographs.  Its not that it is uncommon for justiNYC's flicks get linked to, its just that I do not feel that I thank my web friends nearly enough for their love.  I take these photographs everyday with strangers in mind- with you in mind.  Everytime i snap, I am hoping that whatever my lens has just captured will find itself somehow in front of an interested individual.  In my line of work, one can find oneself in and out of some pretty surreal surroundings- places and spaces that the mind could never conjure up without seeing first hand. All in all, in a way i am offering up my first hand daily archive via blog so that all of you out there can enjoy what i went though (literally) second hand, having seen a picture rather than being forced to settle for what you've heard. I feel the need to say this because lately, I haven't been keeping up with all of the linkages as well as in the past.  Its easy to get caught up in NYC.
subway station
[Brownstoner]
Before I began blogging about my day as a NYC real estate agent (close to 3 yrs ago), I used to write everything down in terrific leather bound journal-ish books.  I would cart them around on the subway and through the streets, stopping whenever the mood struck me to write something down about something that had just happened- almost as if i were taking a picture.  Perhaps one day i will publish that content.  Its interesting to look back at how much the big city impressed me.  Coming from the south, everything in NYC was an exciting situation that i surely had never wrapped my senses around- as with most transplants to this fair city.  Then photography took over for most of those long rants and the paragraphs became blocks and buildings became punctuation and...well, a picture certainly is worth a thousand words.  I write less these days because i carry a camera always.  I am writing books with my lens everytime i leave the house- documenting my participation in all of this urban stuff going on all around me, always.  Am I caught up in it? Of Course.  Just as you are all caught up in your stuff, wherever you are.  I hope my stuff is to you what I have intended it to be- a vacation, of sorts.  When your days are as full of visual junk food as mine, what else is there to do but share?  Many people wonder about the things that I see and will never have the chance to see if what they think is true, is. I just want to thank my fellow blog friends because whether or not I
have said so enough in the past, you should know that it means a lot to
me that art appreciated by such engaging and creative folks with
similar interests.  If it weren't for you and my insatiable mission of giving you new content from the streets to refer to, i would have certainly quit real estate long ago.

The Future Home of Cinema in Williamsburg

The Future Home of Cinema in Williamsburg
Thats right...movies! 136 Metropolitan Ave [between Metrop. & North 1st] will soon be the premier place to go
and (after taking out a mortgage on your hole in wall in NYC) afford (maybe) a descent flick in the theatre. It doesn't look like much now, but it is destined to be BIG, expensive and (as Curbed promises,
"indie"). As to exactly how big....its hard to say, considering the fact that the building is already 2,108sf over F.A.R [link].

It won't be hard for Wburgers to remember this building as it currently is, as the gigantic FOR SALE sign has been dangling out front since before Bushwick was a place to move to.  Even harder to forget will be the sign that came after if was sold, as I believe it must've been the crowning achievement in that agents life- the SOLD sign still hangs to this day.  For a while, a few of us in the hood have wondered whether he might take private little walks over to the building in the middle of the night, just to see if it was all a dream.  Ahhhh...real estate and its hidden pleasures.

The NY Times closed their real estate blog- "Walk Through"

Thats right.  Good night from the Walk Through.  I wonder what this means for real estate blogs everywhere.  Probably nothing.  The new real estate magazine that they are putting out looks kick ass so far though.  Its called Key - give it a turn.

The Observer's Media Mob tipped us off.

Craig Newmark Videos: "NYC Real Estate Agents want me to Charge them"

My buddies over at Sellsius Blog  delivered a nice bundle of Craigslist video's, questions and answers today regarding Craig Newmark's finally getting around to charging real estate agents for listing on his site.  First the videos, then the proposed pricing breakdown (via Sellsius Blog).

Source: Realestatejournal.com

Source: Geek Entertainment Television

Source: Ourmedia.org

Proposed Pricing:

Based on feedback regarding the huge volume discounts offered by
other providers (up to 95% or more), we are now contemplating offering
discounted rates for pre-paid block purchases:

ads cost per ad discount

———————————-

125 $ 1125 ($9 per ad) 10% off

250 $ 2000 ($8 per ad) 20% off

500 $ 3500 ($7 per ad) 30% off

1000 $ 6000 ($6 per ad) 40% off

2000 $10000 ($5 per ad) 50% off

5000 $20000 ($4 per ad) 60% off               [link]

link to the ridiculously long, drawn out debate on this issue here in the Housing Forum
Looks like it may be time to finally roll out the post that I drafted months ago when Craig decided all of a sudden to postpone the charge.

Linkage and Wreckage in Greenpoint and Red Hook

2006_06_debris.jpg

What in the hell is happening to Brooklyn?
Am I the only one concerned?  (well, not today I'm not anyway....)
Both Curbed and Brownstoner got a kick out of the Rubble pic from a couple of days back.  The truth is, Brooklyn's waterfront is looking pretty similar to Boston's BIG DIG these days.  Looks like swimming in the East River might be a bad idea again this summer.
Damn...and my new swim trunks are on Fiyah too!

Here's a nice little slideshow of some of justiNYC's Greenpoint Rubble flicks to get you through the weekend.

Today on Curbed, a bit of linkage to a random justiNYC flick of Shaefer Landing (that would be the luxury 26-story highrise south of the Williamsburg Bridge that looks like an aquarium) and a question of lights (ie. when will the yuppies begin to move in!)

Lights?  We don't need no stinking lights!

Anonymity is fun....shady is done

Just couldn't not post this comment from a Brownstoner post today regarding real estate bloggers and the reasons for remaining anonymous.  Its not that my own comment impressed me or anything- its just that it would be a tragic waste to allow such a beautiful rambling session go to waste, especially on such an interesting topic.  I expect to get a little bit of flack for such an opinion, but i'm not worried.  My closest friend is a ninja.

So the story goes...Brownstoner was interviewed by Read Deal the other day about his anonymity and of course everyone had to put in their two cents- i mean, it is a blog right?

.

brownstoner, uploaded by jUSTINYC

so...below was my comment (you can read the rest by visiting the post).  I just wrote too damn much to not post it on my own blog.  Anyway, here's my opinion as it was:

Brownstoner...you know how much we digg your stuff up here in the N. Bk and I've had a great time passing info and flicks back and forth...this is how we continue to celebrate Bk's diversity...and keep it colorful (nice feathers btw)
As for the anonymity and honest blogging...I do not feel that the two necessarily go hand in hand. I mean, look at the comments that cut-throats and cowards leave while they hide behind their anon-. Look at what Craig is going through due to the ills that come by way of of anon- posting. I do not think that level of 'honesty' carries much merit. Some feel that they 'are just being honest' when they allow whatever silly (sometimes damaging) little witticism they're currently impressing themselves with, ooze from their keyboard. Opinions are like something else we all have. Many people tend to use anonymity as a weapon,. kinda like using a language that no one else in a room understands except for you and your associate, in order to screw someone out of something. However, I think that what you are doing (along with the Grunt and myself,i like to think at times) is something quite different. Where we find the others masking the facts and/or truth in lies and switch baiting, the type of honesty that you/we attempt to bring to the table is masked in art. Art is the anti-broker and can be the buffer and bridge to something positive. I attempt to do this with photography and radically different types of RE advertisement, you with progress, renovation and architectural goodies. We try to escort people 'inside' the issue. How much more truthful can you get than a good photograph? And what about a photograph of an entire situation, including yourself as just another aspect of the environment. As brokers (maybe moreso in Bk than in the city), we do not merely bridge the gap between client and a piece of property,we enable a 'situation' to occur and there's a certain amount of responsibility involved with this. It is difficult to both remain anonymous and responsible about your involvement simultaneously

As for 'shameless self promotion,'those of us who began blogging real estate before the "blogging bubble" know how exciting it was to discover that there were very few like us during that time and the window for self promotion was there for the taking. To write or take pictures at all (for the sake of real estate)was more than most others were doing. Why? Because there is a level of transparency that unfolds in a blog that the shadiest of brokers would never go near. To lay yourself out in front of everyone and say "Here I am NY, and this is what i can do for you/show you" is hard for many, who would rather you slip their fee under the door, rather than shake your hand and check up on your situation in a month. I refuse to work with anyone I can't look in the eye (I'm sure LoftNinja would agree) and although only a portion of the people that contact me actually ever do see my eyes, it will be the most serious of the bunch that gets my time. This has nothing to do with being a 'shitty broker' or whatever else housing forum addicts want to spit. It has to do with experience and knowing how to choose your battles. Most broker bashers are bored people who don't mind wasting a stranger's time, even when they are trying to help them anyway. Its about time and money. Its about me really not being able to take and present you to this landlord who has a short fuse and even shorter attention span, if you arent serious enough to move or are just gonna ask them the same questions i already answered for you just to see if I lied. I work primarily with artists because they are the first to be ejected from a neighborhood that they created. Not all artists are serious, of course- in fact most 'artists' arent artists at all- but the serious ones have a specific need that must be fulfilled with specific space. My clients come to me because I know how to find them that space if i dont already have it and because i care. They wouldnt know that i did if i shielded myself from them completely. I only wish to remain serious about helping people out and this has required doing my own thing and so far that hasnt required me to show up to any bloggers lunch in a mask or a tu-tu. That works great for Brownstoner and the Grunt because they remain anonymous for the sake of other people-which they should. The public are at the mercy of what we show them. I have, to the best of my ability, tried to remain hidden in plain sight.

It looks like i may have written a blog post of my own here, but I think the distinction needed to be made-or at least considered. Brownstoner..the mask rocks. Its like that one brownstone on the entire street with terrific bright red windows..you just know that theres a coloring lesson going on inside. One might forever remember that entire block because of those windows. As for me, i'm more like a factory. Its hard to find a row of factories with any two looking alike....so i just paint them all red and send the picture to all of you. Lets just learn as we go shall we? Its been a long week...thanks for allowing me to ramble.

How one could MAKE a Loft on MakeBlog

howtobuildaloft"

A terrifically NYC useful post on Make Blog for how to make a Loft.   If you live in NYC and are scraping by with one of those "under $100k per year" gigs, chances are you have one (or need one).  justiNYC assumes that it won't be necessary to explain the space issues in the city that demand such an object- lets just say that they are necessary if you plan to not sleep on top of your television.  Most affordable apartments (say under $2000 per month) are like glorified dorm rooms, compared to most anywhere else in the country.  This is why it could be a good idea to try this loft recipe from the Elephant Stairs posse.

This idea is mainly geared towards college kids building a loft for their dorm room so that they can better utilize limited space, but we hope it inspires you to do more.

Sometimes youll get lucky and find a crib that already has a loft built for you, but don't bank on it.  Hopefully this tip may help you in your time of need.

Bringing back the Gold Suits?

The New York Times blog Walk Through, loved Brad Inman's idea for Bringing Back the Gold Suits- the latest inspiration for agents to allow their individual voice to deliver creativity with a side of real estate.  However, it isn't so clear as to whether the public are completely ready for creativity in the real estate market.  For example, The fotoUR has been blogging real estate for well over a year and the LoftNinja before that and it seems as though people aren't quite sure what to make of a real estate agent that is COMPLETELY out to just grab your money. justiNYC predicts a circus of blogging real estate idiots in the up and coming months...and then possibly a few honest agents will emerge linkable.
