New Pursuits and Imagery

Life's been interesting lately and although I haven't updated this blog in a while, I have been very busy.  Home Free Organization is moving right along and in fact, will be the cover story of the newest College of Charleston Magazine "Alumni Issue" in the following weeks.  In addition to this, I've been working hard with the Loftninja on some commercial space and taking a LOT of photos, now that I'm back in NYC.  My good buddy Ras Dave, reggae/roots/dancehall vocalist extraordinaire has been visiting Brooklyn and we've been taking quite a bit of photos for is new album.  Ras Dave has a new social network that I encourage all reggae and dancehall lovers to join.  If this isn't enough, I've been working close with M. Sayyid of Anti-Pop Consortium with imagery and video for some upcoming projects.  You can check out SayyidAirborn blog for the latest updates.

White Boy Crazy Live at "Fantasy Place"

Last night, under the fullest moon of the year 2009, I ventured into the woods of Charleston, SC in search of White Boy Crazy and a place called Fantasy Place- what turned out to be the best 1000 square foot cardboard castle i'd ever been in.   I managed to find both and here are my thoughts on the matter:  You gotta hand it to White Boy Crazy, an underground-ish rap group comprised of a few of my homies (who will go nameless in this post) echoing the sounds of pre-rap Beastie Boys, mixed with persona switching styles only matched by the likes of Kool Keith and uh.. and Kierkegaard?  In any case....label this what you will. If you like hardcore rap mixed with glorified stupidity and chop-your-ass up killer (original) lyrics, with beats pumping from the fingers of a Giant Gorilla and a demonic bird man topped off with lyrics from a Micheal Myers-like rapper spewing words that could only come from hell...you will love White Boy Crazy.  These guy are definitely among my favorites to see these days...I would love to say that its just "good clean fun" but its not.  Its dirty fun.  Who knew it was possible to have a blast such as this in Charleston, SC?  Rap terrorists, oysters, cardboard castles, beer and love...what more could you ask for?  I just wish i could have a Fantasy Place built in NYC...any ideas?

White Boy Crazy creates a uniquely original fusion of punk, rap, halloween and well...um..let's just say it was interesting.  Watch the videos and tell me what you think.  I was reminded of how the other day i saw a button that said "Punk isn't dead..it just sucks now."  I thought of this last night as i watched White Boy Crazy rip up the stage and tear through the crowd, all within the confines of a 40+ foot cardboard castle, affectionately called "Fantasy Place."  If you could find the place you were lucky...and must have been pretty resourceful to do so. Charleston folk sure know how to throw a party...

Haunted-ish Brooklyn Places

While going through archives, I stumbled across quite a few really interesting shots that I've taken around Brooklyn in reverse negative.   They make for some pretty haunted looking photos. A few of these are just flat out creepy looking.  Here are a few examples:

This one was once for sale during the housing bubble.  I'm sure it is being turned into condos at this very moment....

NYC Panoramic Photos of Yesteryear Brooklyn "Space"

Brooklyn is a wild place to photograph and over time I have shot quite a few panos (previously mentioned here) and stitched landscapes.  In an album that I call "Space" you can see many places that no longer exist, lofts that have been destroyed to make way for condos and entire buildings that have been sacrificed to gentrification.

I've seen a lot of interiors and too many exteriors to count and lucky for you, prints are available.  Take a look at the album and if you see something that you would like to have as a high res print, follow the instructions at the bottom of the first page. New York City Cityscapes Issue of The L Magazine features Justin Farrow

The newest L Magazine is on the streets now and it happens to be the long awaited NYC Cityscapes Issue.  In this issue, the reader is presented with iconic snapshots that might be taken (or remembered) by a New Yorker from all corners of the city and outer boroughs.  So pretend you have absolutely nothing to do except for walk around the city and shutterbug the hell out of stuff tourists would like and your schedule will look a little something like this: If you look close, you will see that Justin Farrow (me...duh) has a nice little purdy Williamsburg shot in there.  Although the shots are not of the Old Dutch Mustard this time, this view is from the roof of a building that is no longer small...its growing like a weed, over near McCarren Park (...excuse me, Karl Fisher Row). As seen in the New York City Cityscapes Issue of the L Magazine, this picture from Justin Farrow is reflective of a time that is quickly fleeting in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. As mentioned a few times before, there's just nothing quite like having a photograph that you've taken find its way into the hands of at least a million people while ending up on every street corner of this fine city of ours.  I've had the opportunity to shoot a lot of landscape that no longer exists out here in Brooklyn and I'm very happy to have been given the chance(s) to share it all with you. Judith Supine Bridge Stunt and Other Works you Might Remember

We've shared quite a few moments of artistic aw with Judith Supine, here on justiNYC blog, but this one might take the cake.  According to Gothamist, Judith recently placed a 50 foot tall piece over the south side of the Manhattan Bridge-undoubtedly one of the greatest graffiti stunts involving a NYC bridge in history. This massive piece will most definitely not survive very long, but the feat itself is amazing, to say the least.  So, in honor of Supine and for sake of giving HUGE props, I figured it appropriate to dig out a few other works that I've gathered along the way. Off of North 10th Street in Williamsburg/Greenpoint I've been printing a lot lately and I must say that some of these pieces are among my favorite to see large.  Its almost like reliving the moment that I first stumbled upon each of them.  Thanks Judith for your hard work!  If you'd like to have a print or two to remember yourself by, look me up.  I've got the last one hanging in my living room, big as life.

A Podcastable Street Art Mashup

An ARTvertisement from the LoftNinja

I spoke to the LoftNinja yesterday.  He's been traveling a little bit..."clearing his mind of real estate whoas," he said.  Nevertheless, he's apparently headed back this way and will (as always) be enthusiastic about helping all of you artists out there who are feeling the effects of a retarded real estate market.

He did mention that he's managed to help a few of you guys out while away, somehow...  I guess that's just how ninjas do it.  Look him up if you need a not-so-brokerish agent type, with experience, ripe. He puts the "i" in realty.

By the way In other news, both the LoftNinja and I (justiNYC) received a warm slice of press today from our mutual blog buddy, Frances Flynn Thorsen- the newest (and greatest!) managing editor over at RealTown blog.   On behalf of myself and the Ninja,I'd just like to say thanks and that  we sure appreciate  the ways you appreciate us.   Hope to run into you soon Fran...we have loads of art (and real-i-ty) to discuss.

The Cover of the Latest L Magazine "Fitness Issue" and justiNYC Shot It

Be sure to swing by one of those orange bins, located on just about any corner in NYC and pick up the newest copy of The L Magazine.  I, justiNYC shot the cover shot! 

I find it very interesting (albeit, very NYC) to use a photograph of street art to demonstrate the "Fitness" theme that The L is going for this time around.  Even moreso, the irony of this particular piece (by internationally known UK artist, Banksy) on this particular North 6th Street wall (currently slated for development) is especially interesting. To be precise, this Banksy work is gone already. [Curbed] First, it seemingly had a new tenant, then it was gone.[Test of Will]  It just goes to show, everything in NYC does start and end with real estate-even cover photos on entertainment guides.

Few might see it this way- but could it be said that Williamsburg is "shaping up?"  It is a fact that many (if not most) of the Burg's blocks are "losing weight," yet only to double, triple or even quadruple in size in the places where pounds are being shed. Hmmm...  a little real property philosophy to ponder. Don't lose any weight over it.

As many of you may know, this isn't the first time justiNYC has had the pleasure of decorating  L Magazine covers.  The thrill of having around a hundred thousand New Yorkers carrying around your photograph in their back pocket is enough to feel all warm and fuzzy inside....well, maybe not but one damn sure feels as though they have "made it" in NY when it happens.  Here are a few of the other covers and stories I've worked on with the L Mag:
