Anti-Pop Consortium Reunion Show at Knitting Factory

Last weekend, I went to see my buddy M. Sayyid and his group Anti-Pop Consortium get wild at their reunion show.   They played in the Tap Room of the Knitting Factory in Manhattan. The whole crew showed up, including Beans & High Priest.  It was by far the best show I have ever seen. Next, they plan to do a few shows abroad. For full lineup, check out the group's new Myspace page Other coverage in the Media: BrooklynVegan has some pics Pitchfork Media was there

New York City Cityscapes Issue of The L Magazine features Justin Farrow

The newest L Magazine is on the streets now and it happens to be the long awaited NYC Cityscapes Issue.  In this issue, the reader is presented with iconic snapshots that might be taken (or remembered) by a New Yorker from all corners of the city and outer boroughs.  So pretend you have absolutely nothing to do except for walk around the city and shutterbug the hell out of stuff tourists would like and your schedule will look a little something like this: http://justinyc.typepad.com/photos/reart/lmag_times.jpg If you look close, you will see that Justin Farrow (me...duh) has a nice little purdy Williamsburg shot in there.  Although the shots are not of the Old Dutch Mustard this time, this view is from the roof of a building that is no longer small...its growing like a weed, over near McCarren Park (...excuse me, Karl Fisher Row). As seen in the New York City Cityscapes Issue of the L Magazine, this picture from Justin Farrow is reflective of a time that is quickly fleeting in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. http://justinyc.typepad.com/photos/reart/lmag_wburg_image_justinfarrow.jpg As mentioned a few times before, there's just nothing quite like having a photograph that you've taken find its way into the hands of at least a million people while ending up on every street corner of this fine city of ours.  I've had the opportunity to shoot a lot of landscape that no longer exists out here in Brooklyn and I'm very happy to have been given the chance(s) to share it all with you. Here are a few of the other covers and stories I've worked on with the L Mag:

NYC Spraycan Art from the 80's Might Make you Drool.

I sure wish i had been in NYC during the 80's. In fact, I find myself wishing to finally be back in Brooklyn right now! Just a few more weeks and i'll be headed back...i'll have to fill you all in on the details after the jump (back). For now, feast your eyes on this 98 page PDF all about spraycan art and graffiti in NYC during the 80's. There are some terrific shots of the Rock Steady Crew and the walls just might make you drool. I would say it makes me homesick for NY, but that would be stupid. There's nothing like this anymore in the city-art is too commercialized these days. I have lots to fill you all in on and lots to share. Stay tuned.

Coming Soon! Exclusive justiNYC prints for sale!

11 Spring Street Art Scraps

justiNYC has slightly elsewhere and unfortunately found himself unable to make it inside the Wooster Collective Art show at 11 Spring Street over the weekend.  Nevertheless, these shots were taken last night of the outside during a brief excursion into Manhattan with buddy, M. Sayyid.  Here's some of the leftover 'scraps' we saw.

Williamsburg will soon have nice racks

 wider sidewalks bedford
According to a draft plan (above) that the Streets Blog acquired, Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg is undergoing some major changes. As the Streets report

"the plan calls for the elimination of five motor vehicle parking spaces
on N. 7th Street at Bedford Avenue, alongside the subway station
stairwell on the southeast corner (see the corner at the bottom of the
diagram)."

We will have to wait for the Department of Transportation for an official press release for more information. The plan is expected to remove 5 parking spaces on North 7th Street in order to widen the sidewalk, making room for more bike racks.  Great! So now, Williamsburg will have more room for weekend junk hustlers. Besides, how easy is it to park around that N7th/Bedford madhouse anyway? Fuggitaboutit! But, how many Wall Street kids ride bikes to work? Hmmm
Just last year, the cops were sawing the locks off of bikes that had been secured to the Bedford Ave Station entrance.  A buddy of mine had his impounded for obstructing the sidewalk-(the very sidewalk that is planned for widening).

Gothamist asks the question of whether or not the DOT adding more G and L service would help the (totally packed) chaotic commute to this area brought on by the ridiculous numbers of new residents migrating to the area.  Last year's rezoning is expected to bring 40,000 newbies in this Brooklyn hood within the next decade. Hope they bring bikes!

Will this help the Car Free Bedford initiative? I suppose we'll have to wait for that as well.

Hole in the Fence Hack, fresh out the Crisper

Hole in the Fence Hack, originally uploaded by jUSTINYC.

Every now and again, justiNYC likes to show you how to hack some NYC shit.  A little while back, you were shown how to hack a NYC electric bill and because you loved it soooo much, here's another hack, Jack!
If you want to keep creepers from crawling through the big ass hole in your fence, the best way is to not have a hole in your fence.

Nevertheless, if your fence is holey, use one of the racks from your refrigerator, like this genius did on Flushing Avenue. The
refrigo-hack should do the trick- and you can get a snack while you're at it (if the damn bandit didn't already get away with your grub).

Interesting Frozen Food advertisement in Times Square

You animation is ready

I saw this advertisement for Bertolli frozen foods in the subway station at Times Square- and then i thought about Gickr and figured I could make you guys a show.  This is what happens when you walk by....its kinda like those crazy baseball cards from back in the day that, depending on which direction you are looking at it, appears to move.  Gotta love the advertising idea behind this one.  Just think about how fast the people walk by these ads everyday...in Manhattan, on the run...like this chef.
I wonder what the people over at MIT Advertising Lab would think about this...

Forget paper throwing stars, these things will hurt.  These real deal stars [from Instructables] look like they pack a punch!  Now, I'm not recommending that you throw these at brokers or anything. In fact, hardware like this might be better left to real ninjas.

West Indian Day Parade 2006 in Crown Heights Brooklyn

This year's West Indian Day Parade 2006 was of course off the hook!  I traveled down to Crown Heights via G train [transfer C] and stopped by a buddy's [you guys might know him as RunsWithScissors] new house for some BBQ before venturing over to the Carribean Eastern Parkway.  I always enjoy this parade!  The colors are like nothing else that happens in a year- unless of course you are in the Caribbean.  The food [jerk chicken, corn, etc.] was terrific of course, but the music was the highlight.  There's just something about reggaeton and roots that can transform a crowd into a wave of motion- fully body pulse factory.
I most enjoyed Crown Heights today, as i have had only a little experience with the neighborhood.  Its truly remarkable and some of the homes that I saw today look like any idea of brownstone Brooklyn that you might have floating around in your head.  Many, i would say, belong in a book.  Perhaps, I'll just put a few in mine.
Here are a few of the shot i got from the parade.  Lemme know what you think!  The full set [to and from] is here

First Air Conditioner Created in Brooklyn

Did you know that the first air conditioner was invented in Brooklyn?  It was.  On this day in 1902,  the very first A/C was born at 1013 Grand Street during a heat wave- much like the one kicking our Brooklyn asses right now.  (That's Grand at Morgan, for those who are interested.)

No wonder they keep talking about hurricanes in the city...Miami is Jersey

It makes perfect sense!  Let's see...Manhattanites can't seem to find Brooklyn at times, hurricanes seem to be causing concern for evacuations and snow birds just keep coming back.  In Jason Kottke’s Manhattan Elsewhere, Miami looks a LOT more appealing than Jersey  sits right next to Manhattan and all the snowbirds live happily ever after.  Curbed mentioned a similar idea last Thursday, except for they had invisioned Chicago as NYC's windy neighbor- an idea from Bill Rankin’s Errant Island of Manhattan .
Boy, Crocket and Tubbs have their work cut out for them!

Google goes Green with thier new map mashups for environmentally friendly destinations

Good Grief... Google's done Gone and Got Green! Their new map mashup for environmentally friendly destinations in the US.  The mashup supposedly points out happy granola-type destinations and
services in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Orlando or San Francisco.  A suggestion from Google via Lifehacker:

try searching for “environmentally friendly hotels” instead of
just “hotels” when researching trips to any city.

The angle everyone's after...Danial Edward's "Monument to Pro-Life"

Yesterday, justiNYC got a chance to catch the area where the sun don't

shine.  Danial Edward's "Monument to Pro-Life" feature Britney Spears

giving birth on a bear skin rug. As mentioned before, this has been a highly controversial

art topic for the past couple of weeks, with thousands of letters from

the concerned, the agreeable and the down right pissed.  What do you

make of it?

What do you guys think about the Britney Spears "Pro-Life" sculpture

BS

Artist Daniel Edwards' "Monument to Pro-Life: The Birth of Sean Preston," has created quite a media stir in the past couple of weeks.   In a press release last week about the Williamsburg artist's creation, they explained the reasoning behind said nude sculpture:

A nude Britney Spears on a bearskin rug while giving birth to her firstborn marks a 'first' for Pro-Life. Pop-star Britney Spears is the "ideal" model for Pro-Life and the subject of a dedication at Capla Kesting Fine Art in Brooklyn's Williamsburg gallery district, in what is proclaimed the first Pro-Life monument to birth, in April.

send2press

But many just plain don't get it.  And many of the ones who do get it, neither agree nor endorse the idea behind art.  justiNYC would like to know what you think about the piece.  Do you find it disturbing?  enlightening?  how does it strike you?
According to one report, Britney has yet to comment on the sculpture.  In a couple of days, justiNYC will be shooting the part of the sculpture that no one has seen yet, for a major publication.  He would just like to know how his readers feel.
(Stay tuned for those shots that do not exist yet....)

If you're interested to see the "Monument" first-hand, the opening will be April 7th in Williamsburg, at the Capla Kesting Fine Art Gallery.

Made for NYers: Suitcase + Walker = Caddy

Caddy, originally uploaded by jUSTINYC.

A nifty new idea out of London (spotted on CoolHunting), the "Caddy" ain't for golfers. Its a combination of walker and suitcase that justiNYC predicts will become the new dufflebag for NYers.  Judging from the looks of it, DJs who still spin vinyl will fall in love with this thing.  Don't even get me started with senior citizens...

Something every New Yorker needs: A Helmet megaphone

helmet

Found this over at Adverlab (MIT's blog on the future of advertising) and just couldn't resist.  Apparently, you can pick yours up on Ebay, or what the hell- just make one!  Wanna make some money with it?  Here are a few ways that justiNYC proposes that you could do just that:
1) Sing through it on the train with a cup or one of those little paper bag makeshift change purses and hope you don't get your ass beat.
2) Get someone to pay you to sell comedy show tickets on 34th Street or passes to some shitty spa. Again, hope you don't get your ass beat
3) Finally, maybe you could go help out those African-centric holy men (you know the ones that love their interpretation of the bible and hate white people-yeah them) standing out on the street near Penn Station.  They could cetainly use some help.  But unless you are black, chances are you'll get your ass beat.

There are all sorts of ways to make money in NY-but if you have none, it ususally involves standing on the street or in the train.  Be creative...and loud!

The Fine art of Real Estate

CoolHunting had a post called Spothunters: The Fine Art of Real Estate, mentioning a show by Shepard Fairey coming up in April.  It seemed too interesting to miss, however it wasn't about the same type of real estate art i had hoped. Nevertheless, the show looks very interesting (if you're up for a trip to MA) and i thought this might be a good time to mention the gallery of Real Estate Art that the LoftNinja has been compiling, from ads he's made over the past couple of years. Enjoy Enjoy!
