White Boy Crazy Live at "Fantasy Place"

Last night, under the fullest moon of the year 2009, I ventured into the woods of Charleston, SC in search of White Boy Crazy and a place called Fantasy Place- what turned out to be the best 1000 square foot cardboard castle i'd ever been in.  DSC09011 I managed to find both and here are my thoughts on the matter:  You gotta hand it to White Boy Crazy, an underground-ish rap group comprised of a few of my homies (who will go nameless in this post) echoing the sounds of pre-rap Beastie Boys, mixed with persona switching styles only matched by the likes of Kool Keith and uh.. and Kierkegaard?  In any case....label this what you will. If you like hardcore rap mixed with glorified stupidity and chop-your-ass up killer (original) lyrics, with beats pumping from the fingers of a Giant Gorilla and a demonic bird man topped off with lyrics from a Micheal Myers-like rapper spewing words that could only come from hell...you will love White Boy Crazy. DSC09007 These guy are definitely among my favorites to see these days...I would love to say that its just "good clean fun" but its not.  Its dirty fun.  Who knew it was possible to have a blast such as this in Charleston, SC?  Rap terrorists, oysters, cardboard castles, beer and love...what more could you ask for?  I just wish i could have a Fantasy Place built in NYC...any ideas?

White Boy Crazy creates a uniquely original fusion of punk, rap, halloween and well...um..let's just say it was interesting.  Watch the videos and tell me what you think.  I was reminded of how the other day i saw a button that said "Punk isn't dead..it just sucks now."  I thought of this last night as i watched White Boy Crazy rip up the stage and tear through the crowd, all within the confines of a 40+ foot cardboard castle, affectionately called "Fantasy Place."  If you could find the place you were lucky...and must have been pretty resourceful to do so. Charleston folk sure know how to throw a party...

In any case, without further ado, I give you some of the videos i shot from the show.

Haunted-ish Brooklyn Places

While going through archives, I stumbled across quite a few really interesting shots that I've taken around Brooklyn in reverse negative.   They make for some pretty haunted looking photos. A few of these are just flat out creepy looking.  Here are a few examples:

This one was once for sale during the housing bubble.  I'm sure it is being turned into condos at this very moment....

NYC Panoramic Photos of Yesteryear Brooklyn "Space"

Brooklyn is a wild place to photograph and over time I have shot quite a few panos (previously mentioned here) and stitched landscapes.  In an album that I call "Space" you can see many places that no longer exist, lofts that have been destroyed to make way for condos and entire buildings that have been sacrificed to gentrification.
Justinycspace
I've seen a lot of interiors and too many exteriors to count and lucky for you, prints are available.  Take a look at the album and if you see something that you would like to have as a high res print, follow the instructions at the bottom of the first page. If you would like more information about the location of any image in particular, drop a comment below. Let's remember Brooklyn of yesterday together...

Save The Date: Create Change NYC Will Rock The Vote

Obamarama will be the next "not to miss" event in NYC!  On October 17th, there will be a party and silent auction  at the The Bell House in Brooklyn and it will feature such acts as Dragons of Zynth, TAKKA TAKKA, Cassettes Won't Listen (DJ) and my buddies, the newly reunited Anti-Pop Consortium (their myspace page).
The event is being held to benefit the efforts of Barack Obama and his upcoming election.  This is what Create Change NYC had to say about the nature of the auction:

A silent auction of fine art, photographs, fashion, design goods and services will be held throughout the evening. Bid on items from Albert Watson, Art Streiber, George Pitts, Lewis Cho, Patrick Ervell, Inhabit, Mike Perry, Rachel Mason, Mariah Robertson, Other Music and many others.

Obamarama
NOTE: A donation of $25 or more to the Obama campaign is required to attend this event. Donations will be accepted at the door, or can be made in advance through our group's fund-raising page.(more information on site ). Personally, i think its worth $25 just to see Anti-Pop....but that's just me.
The Bell House is located in Gowanus, Brooklyn at 149 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. Take F, R, M to 4th Ave/9th Street stop.

Beans on a Billboard, Boost'n

You just gotta love when an underground Brooklyn mofo like Beans of Anti-Pop Consortium has his face plastered across a Manhattan billboard. Young Gifted and Black Blog spotted the billboard in Tribeca and shared. Go Beans!

This is a perfect opportunity to tell you that if you do not already have tickets to see the infamous Anti-Pop on Friday (October 3rd) with Stereolab @ Filmore East (formerly Irving Plaza), you need to get a move on.

Justin Farrow on Gawker Artists

Those of you who know me personally (i.e beyond the blogosphere), know that i have been doing quite a bit of visual experimentation lately.  With that said, you can now find some of my work on Gawker Artists
http://justinyc.typepad.com/photos/reart/gawkerartists_justinfarrow.jpg Although this image (above) it's not my favorite of the works submitted, it is creepy enough to burn an image in your mind, i suppose.  I am honored to be ranked among the likes of such talented artists and look forward to producing even more of my crazy brain trash for you all.  However, I must say that returning to NYC will take me away from Adobe as I plan to shoot a lot more and will not be indoors, stuck behind a computer.  Its time to get back to photography and making a difference.
If you have a moment, I would love it if you went to my Gawker Artists page and drop some link love or a comment...or below, of course.  Does my ridiculousness inspire you somehow?

New York City Cityscapes Issue of The L Magazine features Justin Farrow

The newest L Magazine is on the streets now and it happens to be the long awaited NYC Cityscapes Issue.  In this issue, the reader is presented with iconic snapshots that might be taken (or remembered) by a New Yorker from all corners of the city and outer boroughs.  So pretend you have absolutely nothing to do except for walk around the city and shutterbug the hell out of stuff tourists would like and your schedule will look a little something like this: http://justinyc.typepad.com/photos/reart/lmag_times.jpg If you look close, you will see that Justin Farrow (me...duh) has a nice little purdy Williamsburg shot in there.  Although the shots are not of the Old Dutch Mustard this time, this view is from the roof of a building that is no longer small...its growing like a weed, over near McCarren Park (...excuse me, Karl Fisher Row). As seen in the New York City Cityscapes Issue of the L Magazine, this picture from Justin Farrow is reflective of a time that is quickly fleeting in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. http://justinyc.typepad.com/photos/reart/lmag_wburg_image_justinfarrow.jpg As mentioned a few times before, there's just nothing quite like having a photograph that you've taken find its way into the hands of at least a million people while ending up on every street corner of this fine city of ours.  I've had the opportunity to shoot a lot of landscape that no longer exists out here in Brooklyn and I'm very happy to have been given the chance(s) to share it all with you. Here are a few of the other covers and stories I've worked on with the L Mag:

Judith Supine Bridge Stunt and Other Works you Might Remember

We've shared quite a few moments of artistic aw with Judith Supine, here on justiNYC blog, but this one might take the cake.  According to Gothamist, Judith recently placed a 50 foot tall piece over the south side of the Manhattan Bridge-undoubtedly one of the greatest graffiti stunts involving a NYC bridge in history. 2007_7_supine0.jpg This massive piece will most definitely not survive very long, but the feat itself is amazing, to say the least.  So, in honor of Supine and for sake of giving HUGE props, I figured it appropriate to dig out a few other works that I've gathered along the way. Bond Street, Manhattan (near the acclaimed 40 Bond) Judith Supine art on Bond Street
Off of Berry Street in Williamsburg
Judith Supine 2006
Off of North 10th Street in Williamsburg/Greenpoint Don't go Near the Light I've been printing a lot lately and I must say that some of these pieces are among my favorite to see large.  Its almost like reliving the moment that I first stumbled upon each of them.  Thanks Judith for your hard work!  If you'd like to have a print or two to remember yourself by, look me up.  I've got the last one hanging in my living room, big as life.
